Master of Minds ...

As i mentioned in a previous post i am not the speediest painter, so it has taken me all this time to finish my second 15mm sci fi miniature (not helped by interference from work, parenthood, illness etc.)

The second miniature i completed was also from 15mm.co.uk & their excellent SHM sic fi range - like "The Controller" i finished previously, this model was a must have from day one & with so many gaming possibilities a great addition to any collection.

The colour scheme i chose for my collective mind monster was very similar to the one on the example model, i liked the finish & thought why change if it works.

The only twist i added on my model that i knew i wanted as soon as i saw it was i gloss varnished the huge brain in the centre - unfortunately this is not showcased very well in the photograph as the light i used was pretty direct & has caused the matt varnish on the un-textured base segments to reflect this back. under natural light the effect is great giving the brain a fresh "pulsating" look which was one of the appeals of the model in the first place.

The range of unusual characters in the SHM range are really great for firing the imagination & i look forward to painting more of these strange aline creatures in the future.

  1. I think the "glistening brain" effect worked perfectly. It's the first thing I noticed. It actually looks like it's encased in a clear membrane in your photo. Your colour choices also worked perfectly and it looks like it's sitting on the ground in a puddle of some slimy mucus. Great work on this little figure!

    1. Addendum: I always appreciate it when people nitpick my work, so I'll add a nitpick. I think that compared to the rich lifelike flesh, the white eyes are a bit "Orphan Annie". IMO they'd look better with a "jewel" effect giving them some depth and reflectivity.

    2. Thanks for the nitpick, I always welcome constructive criticism - I was shooting for "soulless horror" with the eyes, also the casting was a little inconsistent around the eyes so this helped cover that.

    3. Ah, that makes sense. For eldritch horrors and unfathomable aliens I often go with "black orbs with single white dot highlight."

    4. Got an unfathomable alien on the workbench at the moment, might just give that a go !!

  2. Looks great to me. Now that I'm moving into 15mm fantasy, and always on the look out for weird dungeon critters, and that looks perfect. I'll have to add one to my next order.

    1. Thanks Warren, I too am looking into 15mm fantasy & hadn't considered using this in a scenario but will now !!
The SHM range is full of gribbly beasts that could work in a fantasy setting.
